Edit: installed PGR4 on the USB flash drive, the sound will still corrupt at times, although it's not quite as horrid as when it occurs when playing from the HDD. The sound perhaps streams faster from flash memort vs the HDD. I'd say playing from the DVD is still the best option, USB flash drive second, with the HDD being the "worst".

One benefit from playing from flash memory was saving took no time at all & without issue. At random times with the game installed on the HDD, saving my progress after completing a tournament event within a season would take an age and cause the in-game sound to stutter.

Hope this helps! :D

Cheers.

Thanks, TJP. Must admit I'm disapointed: I thought that maybe the sound corruption was due to the HDD also being used for caching and therefore interfering with the streaming of game data. With the game installed to USB, the HDD could still be used for caching but not cause any contention.

Thing is, I can't bear the noise of the DVD drive whilst playing so I've never completed the game.

Thanks again, for confirming, though as I now won't waste money on a USB memory stick.

No worries, it was a very interesting idea. I'm sure a quality flash drive (I used a transcend 16GB flash drive) would make a difference too. Have to agree that playing games from the DVD is very annoying because of the noise and listening to the drive seek/read all the time makes me worry about its lifespan.

To be honest, just install the game on the HDD and don't worry about the sound. My experience is that while the sound corruption happens, it's not so bad as to prevent me from playing PGR4.

Cheers.

Interestingly, a poster on the official Xbox forums discovered the sound issues were not evident when running PGR4 from a USB flash drive:

I've just tested with the 16GB version of the "Xbox 360® USB Flash Drive by SanDisk®" and have also found this to be the case. At last, no more DVD drive noise nor crackling sounds...
